A heat shield is the protector of the color and taste of the grilling food. If you are a regular grilling food eater, you should use a heat shield. A heat shield protects the food by controlling the temperature and spreading the heat to the entire grill.
You can easily make a heat shield behind the gas grill if you know how to make a heat shield for a grill. Read the instructions attentively and make your homemade heat shield.
Measure the length of the grill, arrange the necessary staff and tools, and follow the steps below.
Don’t jump to the steps directly. Read about the staff first that you have to arrange.

- Drill machine
- Stainless steel screw
- Rivets and rivets gun/ Welding machine
- Hammer
- Holder
- Circular saw or steel cutting staff
How To Make Homemade Heat Shield For A Grill Step By Step
Take Out The Parts Of The Grill And Clean Up:
Take your grill in an open place. Make sure your grill is not hot. If you have grilled just now, let it cool for an hour.
Take out the grill plate. Whatever the heating system is like gas or charcoal, you have to take out the grill plate. Clean up the parts with fresh water and detergent. You can use vinegar to clean up.
Measure The Heat Shield Size:
You are stepping into the most important part of this process. Take the measurement tape and look at the burner. A heat shield covers the burner to spread the heat equally.
If you have multiple burners, you have to make multiple heat shields. For the smaller grill, you can cover it with a single heat shield. The choice is yours.
Measure the length including the height and width of the burner.
Plan The Design:
Making a design for a heat shield is easy. You can choose the straight line for each burner. Next, a Plate Heat Shield is also common in this case. I would suggest you go forward to making a straight line for each burner.
Write down the measurement with height and width. Don’t change the plan midway.
Mark And Cut The Material:
According to the measurement, mark down the materials. Make sure you have taken the right measurement. Once you have cut the material, you cannot change the plan.
Use the circular saw to cut the materials according to the measurement. Don’t keep an extra area.
Bend The Staff If It Is Steel:
After cutting the steel materials, they may seem to be flat. You have to bend them into angel shape. Use the holder to hold one side of the steel and bend the other side.
Use the hammer to bend hard materials. You have the option to join two materials with a welding machine.
Weld The Parts:
Weld the bent parts if necessary. Make sure to put on safety measures while welding the parts. Welding is necessary when you need to make a single shield cover for multiple burners. If you have a single burner that can be covered with a 45-degree angle of the steel, you don’t need to weld.
Make holes on each side to attach the heat shield:
Take the drill machine and make holes on the different sides of the grill. The holes should be appropriate at the right distance. You have to screw up the heat shield onto those holes.
You may have to make 2 holes in each side for a single heat shield. If you need multiple heat shields, make more holes according to the plan.
Place The Heat Shield:
Clean up the newly-made heat shield with vinegar and freshwater. Dry up in the air. Now, place the heat shield onto the grill. Check out the position of the shield whether it can cover the entire burner or not.
If everything is good, go for the next step.
Screw Up The Shield
Screw up the heat shield. I prefer to use screws for better uses. You can unscrew the shield for cleaning up easily. On the other hand, if you weld the shield, it will be fixed. You cannot clean up the burner.
Finishing Up
It should be ready by now. Place the grill plate over the heat shield. The heat shield should glitter from below.
Fire on the burner and test the temperature. Check each side of the grill whether the shield can spread the heat in the entire grill or not.
Materials Used For Making Heat Shield
Aluminum Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is the most common material for making heat shields for the grill. The most common thing about this material is its availability. You can operate this steel friendly.
Aluminum steel is made of two properties. They are aluminum and silicon alloys. The best thing about this steel is that it can hold a high temperature without melting. This steel is good for a charcoal grill. It will help you to maintain the temperature as you want.
Ceramics: You can opt for building a heat shield for your grill. Ceramics are made of hard soil with metallic elements. If you are going to use the heat shield for a charcoal grill, this one may please you.
Cast Iron: Using cast iron for heat shields has become a usual thought. If you look at the biggest factories, you will find the use of cast iron in the boiler as a heat shield.
It may become a little bit costly. However, cast iron can tolerate high temperatures. This modern material can be good for electric or gas grills.
Chrome Plated Steel: Chrome plated steel is a kind of steel. It is best for avoiding corrosion. You can clean up the surface of this steel easily. Likewise, the cast iron, this steel can tolerate high temperatures.
Bottom Line
You should forget about the safety measures because you are going to deal with some heavy tools such as drill machine, circular saws hammer, welding machine, and so on. I hope you will enjoy the procedure and make a heat shield easily.
